Mike Pence again on Meet the Press asserts that unemployment rates have skyrocketed under President Obama. Sorry mike lets look at the facts. http://data.bls.gov/PDQ/servlet/SurveyOutputServlet?data_tool=latest_numbers&series_id=LNS14000000

Unemployment rate in March 2001 - 4.3%

Unemployment rate in March 2009 - 8.6%

Unemployment rate in March 2010 - 9.7%

In what world do you live in if you can assert such a thing?

As ot the accusations of the main stream media being liberal, Gregory didn't even bother to question his basis let alone set the record straight!

If you don't confront an obvious lie as this, where is your credibility?

I agree. That is why I don't use the ignore button here. The usual suspects come here and repeat the same lies without providing facts to support them. No matter how many times you ask for supporting facts all you get is the same lie.

I recall someone I think on CNN Reliable Resources talking about the lack of fact checking and Meet The Press came up. They said when confronted, Gregory basically said that is not his job...it's the viewers. So please know if you think you are getting news from Meet The Press, you are wrong. That died sadly along with Tim. I do miss him sooo much, still. In my eyes, he was one of the few left that actually cared about reporting the news. MSNBC has gone down ever since! I think there is hope in Luke though. I am not sure if they will allow him to develop those skills without a fight, but he seem to want to be fair in his assessments. That is a rarity on MSNBC. If he continues to be fair, I would love to see him in his father's chair one day.

I couldn't vote. it depends on the press. Fox news is not credible most of the time. PBS is .

Propublica is extremely neutral ... huffington post , the NY times ,The Washington Times are not.

Rush , Beck are not credible ........ Rachel Maddow is.

Olbermann has more facts than O Rielly , but both feed off each other. although I do like Olbermann for being a more decent human being He doesn't harass his female staff nor claim he can have the FBI come and arrest you like O'Rielly does..

Unfortunately, David Gregory often lets his guests off the hook with bits of nontruths and sometimes outright lies!!! And some of the others do it too! Sad that we cannot get the facts correctly!!!

He is no Tim Russert; not even close!!! And it would be wonderful if Luke would someday would be in that chair!! Although he is quite young for it, he may be up to the task in a few years. I hope I'm alive to see it!!!

perhaps the correct wording should be unemployment has sky rocketed under democratic controlled congress.

seeing as how under a democratic congress in 09-10

it has sky rocketed

of coarse we all know you people here on newsvine think the president is the one who has the power to do everything in the land.

then again you can not refute who's been in charge of congress under those years but i know you will try.

It really is time for a new form of media to step forth, something along the lines of fact check.org. CNN used to be my fav, but I feel they don't do their homework as well as they used to. When spin goes unchallanged, journalistic credibility suffers.

A great start would be to scroll across the bottom of the screen when the lapdogs and lickspittals appear on the screen who they are lying for. Senator Bayh should have been force to disclose every time he opened his mouth that his wife, Susan, sits on the BOD of Wellpointe. His opinion could still be valid buut all viewers would know whether his comments were said to benefit his family or the American people. Speaking of ole Evan, does anyone know what his plans are starting in 2011? Has he started campaigning for his Democratic replacement?

Bob Nelson.

Susan has been "serving" on fourteen various corporate boards since 1994. Wikipedia describes her as a "professional board member". She is clearly a pipeline for corporate money into the Bayh family... and yet Indiana voters have since elected Evan twice (2004, 1998).

If voters do not care about blatant conflicts of interest, Congresspeople -- they're only human -- will take the money!

(I wonder how often opponents underscore such behavior. If an opponent spotlighted Susan, then it would be difficult to avoid the same treatment in turn.......)

Pence has shown his lack of knowledge many times. He, often, just repeats the talking points of the tea party. Or some other right-wing rhetoric.

Meet the Press is "fluff" stuff now. Gregory has no desire to ask the tough questions. Of either party.

I feel sorry for any news media this day who does not expose lies and those who chose to lie.

One Day ? Maybe a news media will arise that will tell the truth and spread the truth.

This obvious lie is just more propaganda to push more hate buttons and keep false talking points.

It is really amazing that in the age of the Internet and access to on-line databases that the Traditional Media thinks they can get away with this. If you ever watch Jon Stewart on Comedy Central, a lot of his humour involves showing contrasting video clips to expose the hypocrisy and duplicity of... well, pretty much everyone. "I never supported X..." No? Well, here's a video of you saying just that! I think that the Media counts on a substantial portion of their target audience not doing any further research or seeking out other opinions, but just accepting one source of "infotainment" that validates their own beliefs.

Good point Uth. If you have time, go back and watch old interviews that Stewart has done with people from all over the political spectrum. You shouldn't be amazed to see a very fair and balanced treatment of all guests. And as you point out, don't lie to Stewart, he has a knack of throwing it right back in your face!

The news media, the press have their own agenda. They'll lie, and twist the truth to meet their own needs. They'll go so far as giving only part of the story and not the whole story.

I wouldn't say that, but their agenda has certainly been shown over the last three years. They have nowhere to hide anymore and they are making it worse by cleansing their party of any who have moderate views on any issue. As I keep saying, as a republican, the party has left me with very few options. I'm in Maine and even my two Senators, who I have been proud to support, have been caught by the GOP cleaners.

He is right but employment rates lag behind the beginning and end of a recession. The real question is what caused that exploding rate. The answer, irresponsible Republican Economic Policies in 2007-8. The rates in 2009 reflect Bush policies. Obama's policies will reflect this years unemployment rate, and if the trend hold they will be lower.

Another example of Regressive Republican Disinformation (lies).

Just another way to lay the blame on any one other then BO. He is the one who said a trillion dollars and i will keep the rate at 8 or less so here we are at almost 10 with the number close to 17 or 18 percent underemployed or unemployed. When you take charge you also take the blame just like any other job. He has been in there well over a year and all we here is blame Bush the same lefty response as always. When things go well you sure dont mind giving him credit. BO takes the bad with the good. Anyone can blame someone else it takes a leader to take charge instead of crying like a baby pointing fingers. Now that some things have improved slightly I give him some credit for that and so do most Americans I believe but we have such a long ways to go.

this from the party that blamed 911 on clinton.
alwasy claims it inherits recessions when the data shows the recessions started on their watch.
Crap yall tried to blame this recession on jimmy carter.

take charge.. lol my ass.

anywasy obama made his 8% comment on jan 10th 2009 before he even took office and before anyone knew the full extent of the crash.

but if you want to blame obama for that.. then you surely must blame bush.. who decided to prevent the recession with tax cuts. when that didnt work, we had a year of mini bailouts before teh big one where they picked a trillion cause they just wanted to make sure they got it all.

and if you recall while the gop were denying we were slipping into recession the gop tore obama and many dems a new one for being too negative about the economy.

This part of your post I believe also. But I think you do have to say he did take charge and supported and pushed through plans that are unpopular. But to step back out of the media hype is to see that the recession was worse than any predicted, so any optimistic promises were sure to fail. I don't believe "Mission Accomplished" was anounced by anyone though.

There's an interesting story about the Mission Accomplished publicity stunt. It was reported that the USS Abe Lincoln was steaming home from deployment when it had to turn back out to sea and capture W's plane so he could strut across the flight deck.

Typical W and typical Republican: all symbols and no substance. Shine up those Made in China American flag pins guys. It's only fair we buy pins from them, they own the credit card W used.

Nice manipulation of the facts. First you put a before and after 8 year time span for Bush. The ecnomy goes in a cycle and when you hit the recession unemployement goes up. You also put in the first 3 months of Barrack Obama, normally I would say yeah first year blame Bush but Obama put through a trillion doller stimlus bill in which he promised the Unemployment rate would not go up 8% therefore he bought the blame on that.

Lets see what are the actual facts I dug up using google.

Bush's average 5.5% nothing to brag about but nothing to be happy about either.

Obama in 6 months after the stimlus was sign the unemployment rate went from. 6.7 to 9.5% and this was after spending the enormous stimlus bill. He owns the high unemployment rate just from that bill which a lot of ecnomist say did not work.

So by your thought process, if the President comes in at the start of a recession, he must have no fault if the rates keep going up. Also, I started in March for both stats, the trend during a presidency indicates the effects of that presidents economic policies, stimulus funds took months to work their way into the economy, the stimulus was over half made up of tax breaks, and lastly, to the trend of unemplyment rates, lets talk Summer of 2012 and compare the trends of the current and last administrations.

For the first few months yes but the unemployment rate for the last year has been higher then it was when Bush left office. It says that his stimlus plan is not working. Besides the goverment really can't stimulate the ecnomy by giving out money and addin to the defcit.

There are only 3 ways goverment gets money

    Taxing

    Borrowing

    and Printing.

All of them have a negatvie effect on the economy.

The funny thing is I remeber we had to pass the stimlus plan without reading it, a trillion dollers and no one in congress knew what it was for. This debt that has been acmulated under both presedents is going to make it harder for the recovery to happen. Big goverment and big busniess isen't the answer, the small busniess must be able to compete and hire and so far this goverment is content with teaming up with big busniess and nailing the coffin shut on small busniess opprunity.

            tommy (#12),

You are right that instantaneous measures are not appropriate for ongoing phenomena. Measures must be made over time.

For example, employment losses / gains.

Bush saw modest gains in late 2007... and then went into an ever-deepening free-fall for the rest of his mandate, bottoming out at the end of his administration at almost 800 000 job losses per month.

As soon as Obama took over, the situation began to improve... or rather... the Bush-era free-fall was stopped and reversed. Throughout 2009, job continued to be lost, but at an ever lessening rate. And since the beginning of 2010, jobs are being created.

A graphic presentation of this evolution is easy to understand. The reversal from the "Bush collapse" to the "Obama improvement" is limpid.

            Did someone say "stimulus"??

I wonder if CNN was trying to rewrite history when it said back in March of last year that unemployment had hit a twenty five year high.

            CNN Money story here.

I know it continues to be Bush's fault and President Obama stepped into one of the worst possible situations in quite a long time for a president.

But why has the unemployment not gone down from March of 2009 to March of 2010. I seem to remember President Obama promising jobs for people that desperately need them during his signing of the stimulus package back in February of last year. President Obama has promised jobs on numerous occasions so where are the jobs and are these jobs more than temporary jobs such as shovel ready projects and census workers as well.

Problem i,if Gregory calls out his republicon guests for telling lies on his show the word goes out in Washington that you can't spin your story on meet the press. Soon MTP won't be able to get the interesting right wing people on, and ratings dwindle.

Maddow does call out republicon guests when they lie and re-write history and won't let them get away with it, to any degree.

Sadly most of her shows are a monologue. The conservative cowards won't face someone as sharp and smart as she is.
